Inaugural Dartmouth-Keio Alumni Speaker series: Naomi Pollock D'81
On Wednesday, April 24, 2013, we hosted our Inaugural Dartmouth-Keio Alumni Speaker series, featuring Naomi Pollock D'81. We were excited to have Naomi Pollock, a seasoned architectural writer and member of the Dartmouth College Class of 1981, give a talk on her book Made in Japan: 100 New Products (2012). Having received wide recognition and favorable reviews in The Wall Street Journal, Dwell, ICON and a host of other publications, the book presents Japanese product design to an international audience. A limited number of copies of the book will be available for purchase at a discount and signing by Naomi. We also look forward to this great opportunity for Dartmouth and Keio alumni and current students to deepen their relationships with one another as well as with other guests.

Summary:
“Made in Japan” is a simple phrase, but one full of meaning. From chairs to cutlery, Japan creates some of the most innovative, elegant, whimsical and well-made objects in the world. Combining high aesthetic standards with cutting-edge technology, many of these designs turn everyday items into functional works of art that would look as good in a museum as on a kitchen counter. Created specifically for the Japanese consumer, these products reflect the way people live, work and play in a country that prizes highly both exceptional craftsmanship and industrial perfection. Released in September 2012 by Merrell Publishers, Made in Japan: 100 New Products introduces these wonderful objects to an international audience and through these objects informs the reader about contemporary Japan.
